Penn State University invites applications for three fully funded PhD positions as part of an interdisciplinary USDA-funded doctoral training program focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Enhanced Tree Fruit Production Systems. This initiative aims to develop AI-powered precision tools to help the tree fruit industry adapt to a rapidly changing climate. Research topics include AI-based precision agriculture tools, precision crop load management, and precision weed management to build resilience in fruit production systems under climate stressors like extreme temperatures, irregular rainfall, and biotic pressures (pests, diseases, and weeds).
The selected students will join an interdisciplinary cohort in Fall 2025, receiving transdisciplinary training and cross-departmental mentorship. Activities include training in precision agricultural technologies, a tree fruit seminar series, professional development opportunities, mentoring undergraduate students, and grantsmanship and science communication.
Eligibility:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national (per USDA program requirements).
- Applicants should have a strong commitment to independent and collaborative work.
- Candidates from historically underrepresented minority groups in STEM are particularly encouraged to apply.
