University of Basel, Switzerland – Two PhD Positions in Neuroimmunology
The Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel collaboratively offer exciting opportunities for two fully funded PhD positions in Neuroimmunology starting in 2024/2025.
Led by Professor Tobias Derfuss, the Clinical Neuroimmunology Laboratory focuses on understanding the causes and path mechanisms of autoimmune diseases affecting the nervous system, particularly multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis.
The first position, expected to start in Summer 2024, will involve participation in an international study of patient bio samples and a basic science component exploring the physiological role of self-reactive B cells. The second position, expected to start in December 2024, will study the interaction between brain-resident B cells and surrounding brain tissue in experimental animal models.
Both positions will utilize various experimental methods including molecular and cell biology, flow cytometry, histology, microscopy, protein methods, and bioinformatics.
We are seeking candidates who enjoy laboratory work, are independent yet collaborative team players, and possess strong analytical skills. The first position is particularly suitable for candidates interested in pursuing an MD-PhD.
In our small lab, you will find a stable and friendly environment where doctoral and medical students can develop their skills with support from experienced professionals. Our department is well-equipped and fosters a community of supportive PhD students.
