Start Date: January 2025
Position: Investigating groundwater flow and groundwater-surface water interactions under climate change in the Grand River watershed (Ontario)
Advisors: Dr. Jana Levison (University of Guelph), Dr. Christine Rivard (Geological Survey of Canada), Dr. Steven Frey (Aquanty Inc.)
Duration: 4 years
Stipend: Available for 4 years (stipend to support tuition and living expenses; research expenses covered by the research grant)
Project Description: This PhD project focuses on characterizing groundwater flow patterns and groundwater-surface water interactions in the Grand River watershed, Ontario, under climate change conditions. The study area spans approximately 2000 km², including two First Nations reserves with water supply issues. The research aims to address groundwater quality problems due to natural and anthropogenic contaminants.
Key Objectives:
- Characterize shallow aquifers in the study area.
- Examine groundwater flow and dynamics between surface water and groundwater.
- Conduct fieldwork, including permeability tests (slug tests), installation of pressure transducers, and sampling of surficial sediment and core samples.
- Develop 2D and 3D numerical models to estimate hydrogeological properties and boundary conditions.
- Predict the impacts of climate change and contaminant plume dynamics.
- Support land use management and water supply planning.
Experience Required:
- Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Geoscience, Geology, or a related discipline.
Application Process: Interested candidates should contact Dr. Jana Levison (jlevison@uoguelph.ca) and Dr. Christine Rivard (christine.rivard@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca) for more information or to apply. Please send the following documents:
- Cover letter outlining your interest in this position and how your background makes you a suitable candidate.
- CV.
- Unofficial transcript.
Selected candidates will be invited to apply through the federal government’s recruitment ad, which will be published in the coming weeks.
Inclusion Statement: Fostering a culture of inclusion is an institutional imperative, and we invite and encourage applications from all qualified individuals. However, Canadian candidates will be given priority.
