Funded PhD Positions in Structural Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering (CEGE) at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities invites applications for 2-3 fully funded PhD positions in Structural Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Pedram Mortazavi. The anticipated start dates are Fall 2025 or Spring 2025. These positions offer the opportunity to contribute to innovative research addressing the challenges of modern structural engineering.

Research Areas:

The PhD candidates will work in one or more of the following areas:

  • Steel Structures.
  • Large-Scale Structural Testing.
  • Structural Response under Extreme Loads (e.g., Earthquakes).
  • Mass-Timber Structures.
  • Advanced Simulation Methods.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering (mandatory) and an M.Sc. degree in Structural Engineering (preferred).
  • A proven ability to work independently with a strong track record of academic or research achievements.
  • Hands-on experience in large-scale testing and/or working knowledge of simulation programs (e.g., OpenSees, Abaqus).
  • Proficiency in programming tools such as MATLAB, Python, C++, or LabVIEW.
  • Strong background in mathematics and physical sciences.

Funding and Benefits:

Successful candidates will receive full funding through Research Assistantships (RA) and Teaching Assistantships (TA), which include:
