Funded Ph.D. Student Opportunity in Pavement Research

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Wayne State University invites applications for Ph.D. positions starting in Fall 2024. These positions are a fit for individuals interested in conducting interdisciplinary research focusing on advanced pavement inspection and evaluation. The research specifically involves the utilization of drones and artificial intelligence. Selected candidates will collaborate with Dr. Zhou in developing methods to enhance the sustainability and resilience of infrastructure through optimal pavement asset management. This includes the creation of algorithms and analytical tools aimed at improving the inspection and assessment of pavement conditions. In addition to theoretical research, candidates will be immersed in practical applications, involving the collection and analysis of data through drone technology. The application of machine learning models to interpret this data is also a significant aspect of the research responsibilities. This hands-on experience will prepare Ph.D. candidates with valuable skills, positioning them to make a substantial impact in the civil engineering field and paving the way for various professional opportunities.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s and master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering.
  • Engineering, or related fields.
  • Passion for research with an analytical mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proficiency in coding is expected, along with a good knowledge of machine learning and deep learning.
  • Prior research experience and knowledge of pavement.
  • Familiarity with data collection and analysis
  • Experience in publishing in academic journals.
