Description: A Master’s Assistantship is available in the Wetland and Aquatic Biogeochemistry Laboratory (WABL) in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University starting in Summer or Fall 2024. The area of research is focused on wetland plant uptake of nitrogen across a salinity gradient in the Mississippi River Delta. This research is in support of the State of Louisiana’s almost 3- billion-dollar coastal restoration project reconnecting the Mississippi River with coastal basins through river diversions. This is a great opportunity to come and work at the frontlines of coastal land loss. Louisiana has 40% of the contiguous US coastal wetlands but is experiencing 80% of the loss due to high relative sea level rise. Research in this setting will help inform the world’s stable coastlines for the future, when their eustatic sea level reaches our relative sea level rise within the next 50-60 years.
Qualifications: B.S. in Biology, Chemistry, Coastal Environmental Science, Soil Science, Geology, Renewable & Natural Resources, or other related disciplines. Demonstrated excellence in course work, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work well as a team member is required. The student will also complete 240 hours internship hours with the LA Coastal Protection & Restoration, Authority, the state entity guiding LA coastal restoration efforts providing a great career development
opportunity.
Contact and Salary: The assistantship pays a stipend of $22,000/yr + $6,270/yr (full tuition) + $2,162/yr (75% of healthcare premium). Scholarships are also available to supplement the student assistantships.
