PhD Position at the Department of Information Systems, Statistics, and Management Science (ISM) at The University of Alabama (UA)

The Department of Information Systems, Statistics, and Management Science (ISM) in the Culverhouse College of Business at The University of Alabama (UA) invites qualified individuals to apply to the Applied Statistics (APST) PhD program, starting in Spring 2025.

What we offer

Students will work with Statistics faculty on high-impact research in areas including statistical quality control; experimental design; nonparametric statistics; model-based clustering; sufficient dimension reduction; and business analytics and predictive modeling. Students can also engage in collaborative research opportunities with other department areas (Operations Management and/or Management Information Systems) as well as university research institutes such as the Institute of Data and Analytics, Alabama Life Research Institute and the Alabama Transportation Institute

Besides research, teaching opportunities and professional development are integral parts of the APST PhD program. APST is a STEM program, qualifying international students for an F-1 visa for up to three years of Optional Practical Training (OPT). We offer assistantships that include a competitive stipend (including summer support), full tuition, healthcare coverage, and conference travel.

What we look for

Minimum qualifications include:

  • BS degree in statistics, engineering, or another quantitative field
  • Students are expected to achieve an overall GRE score of at least 310, including at least 160 on the quantitative reasoning section.
  • Strong computer programming and analytic skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Preferred qualifications include an MS degree in statistics, engineering, or data science areas and research experience.
