PhD fellowship on Design of lightweight structures against Multiaxial non-Proportional fatigue (DUMPING) at University of Parma, Italy

Department of Engineering of Industrial Systems and Tecnologies

UNIVERSITÀ DI PARMA

Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship in the field of testing and simulation of adhesive joints, when they are subject to multiple sources of fatigue loading which are non-proprtional (i.e. not in phase and/or at the same frequency). The application is foreseen in lightweight components design and manufacturing. The experimental activities are focused on:

  • state-of-art on multiaxial, non-proprtional fatigue failure criteria and testing;
  • baseline (static and fatigue) adhesive joint characterization with butt- and shear-loaded joint geometries
  • design of a specimen for multiaxial, non-proportional fatigue testing on an axial-torsional machine
  • multiaxial fatigue testing with different types of non-proportional fatigue cycle;
  • identification of the best suited failure criterion;
  • validation of the criterion with repect to a test done with a non-proportional fatigue cycle different from those on which the criterion was identified

The PhD is part of the Automotive for Intelligent Mobility PhD course (Automotive Engineering for Intelligent Mobility Phd programme (unibo.it)) – Curiculum 1: Vehicle Design, Manufacturing and Systems Integration, to which the University of Parma participates.

The call will open about half of May 2024 and close after one month. MSc. student can also apply, provided they will graduate before Nov. 1 2024, when the PhD course begins. A public selection will be performed to define the list of eligible candidates.

An enthusiastic and self-motivated person is needed with background preferentially on Automotive, Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering; candidates possessing a Civil or Materials Engineering degree are also evaluated. An enquiring and rigorous approach to research together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits are appreciated. Training will be given on bonded joint properties, design, testing and modelling. Participation to national and international conferences is foreseen, giving the opportunity to become a skilled communicator, comfortable in an international situation. Good team-working, observational and communication skills are essential. A fluent English, spoken and written, is mandatory. For foreign candidates, the knowledge of Italian is a preferential skill.
