Swanson School of Engineering
Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science
Physical Metallurgy and Materials Design Laboratory
At least one graduate research position is available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, University of Pittsburgh, starting in the Fall of 2024 (preferred) or Spring of 2025. Research projects will be related to new alloy development for advanced manufacturing, including 3D printing. The graduate will perform research studies in the Physical Metallurgy and Materials Design (PMMD) Laboratory directed by Prof. Wei Xiong. http://www.pitt.edu/~weixiong
Candidates should be good at English communication (oral and written). Strongly self-motivated students and researchers with a strong interest in materials and processing design are welcome to join the PMMD lab. This position is primarily open for students holding a master’s degree in materials science or metallurgical engineering before enrollment, although outstanding undergraduates are also strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to have a good record of studying and research. A good track record of peer-reviewed journal publication will be significantly helpful for a successful application.
The graduate will study and work with experts in computational materials design, additive manufacturing (alloy 3D printing), and microstructure characterization in the PMMD lab and Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science. The University of Pittsburgh has an ANSYS Additive Manufacturing Center housing five additive manufacturing equipment, including binder jetting, powder bed, and directed energy deposition processes. https://www.engineering.pitt.edu/AMRL/. In addition, The Swanson School of Engineering has established a center equipped with Nanoscale Fabrication and Characterization Facility (NFCF). http://www.nano.pitt.edu/facilities. Besides several (S)TEM and one EPMA Electron Probe Microanalysis, the NFCF is equipped with many top-notch microstructure characterization instruments, including one Environmental TEM Hitachi H9500 and one Titan Themis G2 200 Probe Cs Corrected STEM. The research opportunity will help the successful candidate strengthen his/her skills in materials characterization for materials and processing design, and will significantly help in future career development.
Qualified applicants must have a master’s or bachelor’s degree in materials science, metallurgical engineering, or similar fields prior to beginning enrollment. Scholarship/stipend will be based on the prevailing wage for the graduate researcher or teaching assistant set by the University of Pittsburgh. The scholarship/stipend will be renewed annually depending on performance. The GRE test is optional, although it will be a plus. Before enrollment, the Duolingo/TOEFL/IELTS or regular English ability test is required. The University of Pittsburgh is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer that values equality of opportunity, human dignity, and diversity.
To apply, please submit the application documents to Prof. Wei Xiong (weixiong@pitt.edu) with an email titled “Graduate Application 2024 by Your_Full_Name.” The application package should include a complete CV, transcripts of all degrees, a list of reference contacts, and a cover letter (less than two pages) summarizing your study/research experience and career goals (including an anticipated starting date). Review of applicants will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applicants are encouraged to learn about the research lab and the University of Pittsburgh through the website before application: http://www.pitt.edu/~weixiong.
