Aquaculture PhD Graduate Research Assistant Opportunity in Fish Nutrition & Nutrigenomics at The University of Maine, USA

The Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI) at the University of Maine (https://umaine.edu/aquaculture/) is seeking a motivated and qualified student for a PhD program in Fish Nutrition & Nutrigenomics. The student will join a team of finfish nutritionists and nutrigenomics experts.
Key responsibilities include:

  1. Evaluating novel feed ingredients for use in sustainable salmon feeds.
  2. Applying physio-biochemical and molecular approaches in finfish nutrition studies.

The student will support a recently funded five-year project aimed at developing sustainable feed ingredients, starting in Spring 2025.

Required Qualifications:

  • Academic background in aquaculture, marine biology, molecular biology, or related fields.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
  • Ability to perform tasks associated with analytical laboratory and fish husbandry activities.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and proactive in learning new skills.
  • Experience with data management and statistical analysis.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS degree in aquaculture, marine biology, molecular biology, or related fields.
  • Background in fish nutrition, physiology, molecular biology, and nutrigenomics.
  • Experience with aquafeed formulation and production.

What We Offer: The Fish Nutrition & Nutrigenomics Laboratory (FNNL) advances research related to the development of sustainable feeds for the aquaculture industry in Maine, nationally, and internationally. FNNL has capabilities for feed formulation, analytical and physio-biochemical profiling, and specialized nutrigenomics, as well as training for undergraduate and graduate students.

The student will have access to state-of-the-art wet labs at ARI’s Sustainable Aquaculture Workforce Innovation Center and Aquatic Animal Health Lab, as well as advanced analytical and molecular equipment at FNNL, including a plasma chemistry analyzer, RT-qPCR, spectrophotometer, and more. The candidate will have extensive training opportunities, including individual mentoring, national workshops, and conferences, as well as ample networking opportunities for career development.

The student will receive a competitive stipend and health insurance via a grant-funded assistantship. The student will need to be accepted to either the AAR or SMS program. The student’s primary work activities will be conducted on the UMaine campus in Orono, Maine, United States.
