Funding Details: The successful candidate will receive a PhD salary for three years, with the project commencing in the fall of 2024.
Lab Locations: This enriching PhD project will take place at the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, the largest neuroscience institute in France, affiliated with the CNRS and INSERM national institutes, and the Department of Neuroradiology at Klinikum rechts der Isar, part of the Technical University of Munich. Both Lyon and Munich are vibrant international cities with a rich culture, dynamic scientific ecosystems, and a central location near the Alps, offering a stimulating environment, both at the professional and personal levels.
PhD Supervisors You will be guided by Dr. Gérard Derosière, an INSERM Researcher and Group Leader based in Lyon, and Dr. Franziska Knolle, a Researcher and Group Leader based in Munich.
Project Title SchizApathy: Unveiling the Neuro-Computational Bases of Apathy in Schizophrenia
Project Description Apathy, characterized by a reduced engagement in effortful, reward- driven actions, is prevalent in many psychiatric and neurological disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, Parkinson’s Disease, and Alzheimer’s Disease. Despite not being the core symptom, apathy significantly diminishes patients’ quality of life and adversely affects their functional outcomes. Our project, SchizApathy, aims to address the significant challenges faced by current research on apathy. We aim to develop neuro-computational biomarkers that offer objective insights into the causes of apathy in schizophrenia and to devise effective therapeutic approaches to improve engagement in effort and alleviate apathy in patients, based on brain stimulation
Skills Required We are looking for candidates with a strong problem-solving ability, proficiency in English, and a background or interest in neuroscience or biology. Good programming skills or a willingness to learn would be an added advantage. Knowledge of French and/or German is not mandatory but would be a plus.
