Graduate and Postdoctoral Research Positions in Advanced Wastewater Treatment Virginia Tech, Blacksburg & Northern Virginia Campuses, USA

The Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, led by Dr. Zhiwu Wang, invites applications for multiple fully funded graduate (MS/PhD) and postdoctoral research positions in advanced wastewater treatment research. These positions are funded by a variety of federal and industrial grants, with an anticipated start date of Spring or Fall 2025.

Graduate positions offer stipends, tuition coverage, health insurance, and travel support for conferences. Postdoctoral positions will begin with a one-year contract, with the possibility of extension for up to three years. Selected candidates can choose to work either at the Blacksburg campus or the Northern Virginia campus.

Research Topics:

  • Anaerobic Digestion
  • Nutrient Removal & Resource Recovery
  • Aerobic Granulation
  • Bioplastics & Biofuel Production
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) Destruction

Eligibility Requirements:

  1. MS/PhD Applicants:
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or must earn prior to application deadline) in Chemical Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
  2. Postdoctoral Applicants:
    • PhD degree awarded within the past four years, with at least one year of eligibility remaining.
  3. Skills:
    • Demonstrated scientific writing and communication skills (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, competitions).
  4. International Applicants:
    • TOEFL (minimum score: 90 iBT) or IELTS (minimum score: 6.5) required for admission. GRE may be waived.
