Project Title:
Monitoring the Distribution of Roseau Cane (Phragmites australis) and Roseau Cane Scale (Nipponaclerda biwakoensis) Using High-Resolution Drone Imagery and Machine Learning
Project Overview:
The Image-Guided Lab (IGLab) at LSU is seeking an enthusiastic graduate student to participate in a cutting-edge research project aimed at monitoring and managing Roseau Cane ecosystems in the lower Mississippi River Delta. This project will leverage advanced remote sensing technologies, such as high-resolution drone imagery, in combination with machine learning algorithms for detecting and counting invasive Roseau Cane Scale, which poses a significant threat to the local environment.
This research is multidisciplinary, integrating fields of entomology, remote sensing, ecology, and data science. The selected student will gain hands-on experience in:
- Precision pest management
- GIS-based remote sensing analysis
- Machine learning for species detection and monitoring
The project contributes to ongoing restoration efforts, improving strategies for invasive species management in aquatic ecosystems.
Benefits and Learning Opportunities:
The IGLab values inclusivity, mentorship, and teamwork. Students will have opportunities to develop professional skills, engage with cutting-edge technology, and work alongside a diverse team of experts in entomology, ecology, and remote sensing at Louisiana State University.
Application Information:
- Deadline: September 17, 2024
This position is ideal for students interested in gaining innovative research experience while contributing to impactful environmental restoration projects.
