The Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources at Kansas State University is inviting applications for a Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistantship in Turfgrass Science, focusing on USDA-funded cool-season turfgrass sod production research.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on fine fescue, tall fescue, and Kentucky bluegrass.
- Manage field trials at the university’s research center (4 miles from campus) and an on-farm site (90 miles from campus).
- Study sod strength, handling at harvest, growth after harvest, soil losses, and management inputs (mowing, irrigation, fertilizer, pesticides).
- Organize team meetings, prepare reports, and assist in creating extension outreach materials.
- Opportunities to serve as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses.
Qualifications:
- M.S. in horticulture, turfgrass science, agronomy, plant science, or a related field.
- Background in turfgrass science and interest in research, teaching, and extension.
- Strong communication skills (oral and written) and statistical analysis experience.
- Field research or turfgrass management experience preferred.
- Valid driver’s license (or ability to obtain one within a month).
Position Details:
- Location: Manhattan, KS
- Start Date: No later than June 1, 2025.
- Stipend: $26,000/year with tuition coverage (6/6/3 credit hours for fall, spring, and summer semesters). Optional health insurance available.
