PhD Position: Transition-Metal Catalysis with MOFs

The Neumann group at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung is committed to advancing catalyst design beyond the active site. Our focus lies in crafting intelligent support materials by precisely engineering the distances between active sites, metal-support interactions, and influencing the chemistry of the extended environment surrounding the active site.

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our team in the field of transition metal catalysis with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Our research group aims to develop thermal and light-mediated catalysis based on transition metals with well-defined ligand environments. Additionally, we conduct mechanistic studies to comprehend the functionality of our MOF-based catalysts.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates should possess:

  • A Master’s degree in chemistry (preferably in organic or inorganic chemistry)
  • A strong theoretical foundation in organic, inorganic, and coordination chemistry, along with chemical catalysis
  • Proficiency in English language and excellent communication skills
  • A commitment to learning new skills and an enthusiasm for exploring uncharted territories

What We Offer:

  • 3-year funding with potential for extension
  • Salary: 67% of the E13 pay grade (refer to https://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/tvoed/bund/)
  • Interdisciplinary work providing multifaceted training, laying a solid foundation for future careers in various subfields of chemistry
  • Access to the institute’s outstanding service departments and workshops offering expertise in a wide range of experimental techniques and custom equipment development
  • The working language of the group is English, and no German language skills are required (subsidized German courses available but entirely optional)
  • Active intellectual and social environment within the group, department, and institute
  • We actively encourage applications from underrepresented groups, with resources available to support individuals with disabilities, caregivers of young children, and all PhD students in general (refer to https://www.kofo.mpg.de/863544/Campus-L.ife)
  • Flexibility in planning working hours for group members

The position is available starting September 16th, 2024 (start date negotiable).

Application Deadline: All applications received until June 1st will be considered

Please submit your letter of motivation and CV to Dr. Constanze Neumann via email (neumann@kofo.mpg.de) with the subject line “Application – metal phosphide catalysis.” Shortlisted candidates will be contacted to provide contact information for two referees.
