The University of Pisa’s Department of Biology is offering a 3-year PhD position focused on “Evaluating biodiversity stability and resilience in complex habitat networks using emerging sensing technologies,” starting November 1, 2024. This position is funded by the EU Horizon project BioEcoOcean and the national project TRIGRASS.

Project Overview: The PhD will investigate how the spatial organization of foundation species impacts stability and resilience. Using innovative tools like digital imagery, eDNA, and satellites, the research will address habitat fragmentation and its effects on biodiversity at various scales. The candidate will employ manipulative field experiments and AI algorithms for image recognition, contributing to conservation planning.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Background in Ecology/Marine Biology.
  • Experience with the approaches mentioned above.
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency in English.
  • Soft skills and the ability to work in a dynamic research environment.

The successful candidate will join Prof. Lisandro Benedetti-Cecchi’s team, benefiting from collaborations with global research initiatives.
