FEBRI, the graduate school and research institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business, has one PhD position available in the field of Recipes for Local and Regional Economic Development Across Europe.

Project Description

Reducing regional economic disparities is one of the European Union’s core foundational aims, yet inequality persists. This project investigates the reasons for these regional disparities and seeks to offer recommendations on how the EU’s core regional policy can be structured to address these issues. The research themes include cross-regional collaboration, interregional alliances, and smart specialization. For example, while regions’ specialization strategies aim to identify their core strengths and focus policy towards them, they currently lead to mimicry of Europe’s core regions. A more contextually sensitive approach that prioritizes growth paths has the potential to unlock growth and develop regional opportunity “recipes” in both the core and periphery of the EU.

The PhD position is embedded in the research program Innovation & Organization of FEB’s Research Institute. We offer a truly international environment (our working language is English, and we currently employ more than 15 different nationalities). The project will be supervised by Prof. Florian Noseleit, Dr. Daniël Speldekamp, and Dr. Benito Giordano, all of whom have a track record of publishing in leading academic journals.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is ambitious, highly motivated, and wishes to pursue a career in research at a leading university or in a high-level professional role where a PhD is advantageous. The project allows for both qualitative and quantitative approaches (or a mix thereof), and it is important that the candidate has a strong analytical mindset and is thoroughly trained in at least one research methodology.
