The von der Wense Natural Language Processing (NALA) group, headed by Prof. Dr. Katharina von der Wense at the Institute of Computer Science at JGU, aims to fill the following vacancy as soon as possible:
Academic Staff Member (PhD Position) in Natural Language Processing
Salary class 13 TV-L, 100%-time
The selected applicant will contribute to the MAINCE project, which is funded by the Carl-Zeiss-Foundation. The goal of MAINCE is to advance medical drug research by automating the investigation of the mechanisms of action of various molecules as much as possible. The applicant will work in the area of natural language processing, developing algorithms and language models to analyze medical publications and other relevant data.
The Institute of Computer Science at JGU specializes in data science. Prof. von der Wense’s Group NALA is hosted at both JGU and the University of Colorado Boulder in the USA and is internationally visible (https://nala-cub.github.io). The selected applicant is expected to regularly collaborate with members of the NALA group as well as with researchers working on the MAINCE project.
Your Tasks
- Conduct independent research and publish in the field of natural language processing with limited amounts of data, especially for medical applications.
- Supervise students working on short-term research projects (e.g., master’s theses).
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of researchers as part of MAINCE.
Your Profile
- A successfully completed university degree in computer science, mathematics, computational linguistics, or related areas.
- Research experience in the field of natural language processing.
- Excellent proficiency in oral and written English.
- Very good programming skills, especially in Python.
- Ability to work both in a team and independently.

The position is paid according to EG 13 TV-L (full-time) and is to be filled by July 1, 2024. The position is limited to a period of 3 years and serves the purpose of academic qualification (doctorate).
