A fully funded PhD research assistantship is available with Dr. Meredith Martin (Assistant professor, Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources, College of Natural Resources, North Carolina State University). The successful applicant will conduct independent research in the field of urban forestry in the Southeastern US, and will be co-advised by Dr. Jennifer Richmond-Bryant and Dr. Justin Baker.
The project includes field sampling in the city of Durham, as well as compiling and analyzing large datasets for urban forest inventories across the southeastern region. The position is funded for three years and includes a graduate stipend, tuition, and health insurance. Funds are also available for fieldwork and travel expenses. The ideal start date is August 2024.
Desired qualifications:
1) A Masters degree in forestry, ecology, plant science, environmental science, biology, statistics, or a related field;
2) Experience conducting field research.
3) Experience compiling, organizing, and analyzing large datasets.
4) Experience with R or Python statistical programing.
5) Experience with GIS.
6) Interest/experience in research on urban forestry and tree planting initiatives.
7) Interest/experience t in optimization and numerical simulation methods in forestry.
