Seeking Research Specialist in Molecular Biology at Princeton University

Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University is currently seeking a Research Specialist I to join Dr. Martin Jonikas’ lab. Our lab focuses on developing tools and resources for photosynthetic organisms to advance sustainability efforts.

As a Research Specialist I, you will primarily be involved in understanding the structure and function of the pyrenoid, an algal CO2-concentrating organelle. Your role will also include engineering a minimal functional pyrenoid into plants to enhance their yields. Dr. Jonikas is committed to providing a supportive training environment for all lab members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a postdoc to engineer algal CO2-concentrating mechanism components into the model plant Nicotiana Benthamiana.
  • Conduct plant growth experiments under various conditions.
  • Perform transient and stable expression of algal genes in plants.
  • Characterize transgenic plants using genetic and molecular assays such as PCR and Western Blots.
  • Contribute intellectually to the project.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • At least 1 year of experience in molecular biology laboratory work.
  • Highly motivated with a problem-solving attitude.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.
  • Capable of lifting at least 30 lbs and occasionally using a ladder.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology or related field with an outstanding academic record.
  • Ability to troubleshoot experiments independently.
  • Experience with sterile technique, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, or Western blotting.
  • Familiarity with Chlamydomonas, E. coli, or yeast.
  • Expertise in photosynthesis or carbon concentrating mechanisms.
