Two PhD Student Positions at Institute of Molecular Genetics, Czech Academy of Sciences

Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences

Laboratory of Biology of the Cell Nucleus

Supervisors: Pavel Hozak and Tomas Venit

Two PhD Student Positions Available!

Topic 1: Investigating the Role of Phosphoinositides (PIPs) in Spatiotemporal Regulation of Nuclear Processes (ID 269611)

The PhD candidate will characterize nuclear structures containing PIPs through a combination of lipidomics, proteomics (quantitative MS), molecular biology (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9), biochemical, and advanced microscopy techniques (e.g., confocal, SIM, STED, FRAP). Special focus will be on Nuclear Lipid Islets (NLIs), discovered as crucial nuclear structures influencing gene transcription modulation. Collaborating with other laboratories, we will develop an experimental system using nanodiamonds to mimic NLIs’ properties and explore the involvement of various phosphoinositides in DNA transcription using an in vitro system.

Topic 2: Studying Nuclear Actin-Binding Proteins in Cellular Fate Regulation (ID 269612)

The PhD candidate will investigate cytoskeletal proteins NM1 and Carmil 1 during cellular differentiation and cell fate commitment. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the relationships between actin and actin-binding proteins in regulating cell metabolism of specific human stem and cancer cell types. Additionally, potential anti-cancer therapy strategies will be explored to reprogram and reverse cell metabolism. The candidate will also examine the role of actin-binding proteins in tumor mRNA splicing and transport, as well as their mutual interaction as part of complex gene expression regulation from DNA to proteins.
